2021 WINTER and SUMMER Institutes and Immersions

Under present circumstances, please see our regular course offerings.  Institutes and Immersions will resume in 2021.

American Sign Language Institutes are training sessions that are the equivalent to two levels of our standard class curriculum. Students taking one or more Institutes can accelerate their progress toward fluency.  See the descriptions below.

Please note:  Institutes are not ASL camps.  We offer a classroom experience.  We do not have dorms or housing facilities.  Nearby, there are a number of Airbnbs that range in price from $30.00 a night and up. There are many hotels in the area.  If you want suggestions or assistance, we will be happy to help.

The Institutes can take place throughout the year at one of our sites or at your facility. They are available nationally.
Outside a fifty mile radius of Providence, RI, there are travel fees and possibly accommodation fees. At your site, we can offer the level 1, 2 or 3 Institute.

Summer Institutes have brought students together from all over the country.  We have had students from: California, Colorado, Wisconsin, New Jersey, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Florida, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, Illinois, Washington and Missouri.  These intensive trainings build your knowledge, skill and confidence quickly.  In 2018, for the first time, we welcomed international students from the Dominican Republic, Switzerland and France.

For those who travel here, we can provide transportation – pick up at the train station, bus station or airport, and car pooling while here.

You can register online or we can send you a registration form.

About 35 hours of instruction

This Institute will be taught partly with voice as students gain a clear understanding of what ASL is and what it is not.  They will understand how to use English meaning to interpret into ASL effectively and accurately. They will be given feedback on their presentations and shown options on how to make any needed corrections.

The Immersions, all-day field trips using ASL only, will be to Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut on Tuesday and Boston on Thursday.  On those days, lunch is provided by ASL Academy.
In Mystic, students will get to see and use classifiers extensively.  There are stories to be told and interesting things to see.
In Boston, students will get a very interesting walking tour, lunch in Chinatown, the holocaust memorial and parts of the famous North End.
